The West Coast of the Cape is a still fairly well kept secret destination. Quaint towns and villages like Yserfontein, Langebaan, Saldanha act as stepping-stones on the way to the town of Velddrif. Also along this stretch of coast you can find hidden bays like Stompneus Bay, Slipper Bay, Paternoster and Cape Columbine, where you can often see whales and dolphins at play.
Velddrif is situated at the mouth of the Berg River. It has a rich fishing history and a well-known bird sanctuary, which boasts around 240 species of birds.
THE TOUR
You will arrive at a meeting place at 10h00 where qualified guides will meet you and join you for a yummy continental breakfast at the Port Owen Bistro.
After breakfast we board the river crafts - either charter boats, or, the 2-man kayaks. We then take you on a trip up the river into the bird sanctuary. The course of the river traverses the tidal wetlands of the Berg River. The setting is tranquil and beautiful.
A gourmet lunch is served and a wine tasting follows, either on board the charter boat or right on the banks of the river – you decide. If this sounds a little too peaceful and you’d like some adventure, a 9-meter bridge jump is available at the lunch location.
After the meal there is ample opportunity to simply relax and watch the birds, before we head back along the waterway to the starting point.
