An unforgettable day awaits you on this one day tour of the wild West Coast of the Cape.
This region has a unique ambiance and appeal. The West Coast National Park showcases the best of the natural, desolate beauty of the area.
The history of this coastline is as fascinating as it is ancient. Some 117 000 years a lone woman walked across dunes at the edge of the lagoon and left mark - her footprints - preserved through the ages by layers of wind-blown sand. These footprints, named ‘Eve’s footprints’, were recently exposed when the sandstone cliffs that had concealed them collapsed. They have become a famous site for visitors to the region. Walk in ‘Eve’s’ footprints’ as you explore the reserve.
Here you will enjoy the sites and sounds of the Langebaan Lagoon and five adjacent islands, alive with thousands of seabirds. Generations ago a thriving guano-collecting community lived in the area. Migrant wader species make the fragile salt marshes their home on their annual visit to the region – as many as 70 000 birds come to feed here each year.
Come spring and the strandveld comes alive with colour – multi-tones and hues of flowers form a natural carpet and people come from around the world to marvel at this spectacle.
The day ends with a very special encounter at the !Khwa ttu San Culture and Education Center. Here, San guides of Strandloper descent take you on a journey back into their past, and proudly speak of their future. You will accompany them on a game tracking journey across ancient lands to a boma offering spectacular views across the ocean to Table Mountain.
This Cultural centre is newly opened. It is an important showcase of the ancient people of this country. Unlike some cultural tours which tend to be disrespectful and patronizing, this centre has a different slant, working with the people.
Any responsible tourist who truly has a heart to learn more about the environment as well as the history of the Cape will find this an enriching and rewarding tour. |
