Spacious bathrooms have deep baths with a view of the bush, and both inside and outside, monkey’s eye-view private showers for an unforgettable bushveld experience. An additional four junior guests can be comfortably accommodated in the kids room, where they have access to recreational facilities such as television, a DVD player, satellite access and a sofa that opens up into two super-size single beds. Guests can also have breakfast in the morning sunshine to the accompaniment of cackling Wood Hoopoes, lunch ‘al fresco’ in the shaded garden, or dinner by starlight and candles on the broad pool deck overlooking the fast-flowing Marico River.
The heated infinity pool is surrounded by comfortable loungers for relaxing, bush-view siestas after a dip in the cool water. A wooden veranda surrounds the lodge perimeter, providing quiet nooks for the private bush showers and leading to a romantic riverside raised walkway for the more energetically inclined. On moonlit nights, dine around a crackling bonfire in the boma, while the calls of Lions, Jackals, Hyenas and Nightjars provide light dinner music – African bush-style - whetting the appetite for both the delicious cuisine, and the fireside stories of thrilling bush adventures. A selection of excellent house wines is provided with meals and a superior selection is available from the wine cellar if required, at extra charge. On chilly nights or lazy days, savour the welcoming peace of the luxurious indoor lounge area, with its deep, comfortable couches, night-time crackling fire and panoramic daytime view of the bush and passing wildlife. And, as if this is not all enough, there is a comprehensive library of topical books, DVD’s and CD’s available to suit all tastes.
Owner’s House
Morukuru Owner’s House is the pride and heart of Morukuru - the epitome of bush lodge elegance and charm. Here, as at the Lodge, the guests’ every wish, whim, desire or dream is satisfied by a caring and friendly staff, whose love of what they do and where they live, is reflected in their instinctive attentiveness and anticipation of one’s every need.
The entrance is shaded by a mighty Morukuru tree, the lodge’s namesake, a sturdy and impressive sentinel standing guard over all who enter. The Owner’s House has two spacious, beautifully appointed bedrooms with the usual Morukuru facilities such as full en-suite, air-conditioning and fans, fireplace and insect-screened sliding doors giving access to private balconies. There are also rest-and-relaxation areas where guests can hide away and listen to the whispering green canopy of trees, or to the birds throwing their calls like pebbles into a pool of tranquility.
The bedrooms mirror each other on either side of the central living area where plush soft furnishings, Madikwe stone crafted by the local community, wood and glass elements work together to create a pleasing synergy of contemporary African décor, style and ambiance. The living area boasts state-of-the-art digital entertainment and home office facilities, as well as an elegant dining area and formal lounge. Two terraced balcony areas provide outdoor seating for a the endless array of Morukuru-styled culinary experiences as diverse as high tea, open-air pizzas or an ‘out-of-Africa’, colonial style dining experience complete with crystal glassware, crisp linen and silver cutlery lit by candle and starlight.
Morukuru Owner’s House also has a fully-stocked, custom-designed wine cellar, featuring a great selection of good South African house and estate wines, which the butler, who has been empowered to study South African wine so as to be able to advise guests knowledgeably on food-and-wine combinations, will give interested guests an enthusiastic tour.
Catering at the Owner’s House is done from a fully-equipped private kitchen where guests are also welcome to a constant supply of quality teas, coffees and home-made snacks such as rusks and biscotti. Furthermore, overseas guests are welcome to demonstrate national recipes if the mood takes them, and junior guests have even been known to hone their baking and cooking skills under the benevolent guidance of the dedicated chef!
Those guests favoring a more intrepid style of bathing will delight in the unforgettable experience afforded by the famed bushveld bath at the Owner’s House. This is set against a backdrop of cascading water from the heated infinity pool situated one level above. Here one could easily imagine oneself to be in the midst of a Rider Haggard or Wilbur Smith novel, delighting in a rose-petal bath of indulgence under a star-studded African night sky or wallowing in the sunlit warmth of morning.

Game Drives
Morukuru is situated on private land, a jewel in the magnificent wildlife crown that is Madikwe Game Reserve. Teeming with game and wildlife, as well as many different bird species, the Morukuru game drive experience is made more memorable by the fact that the drives are totally tailored to fit in with what guests would like to see - and when they would like to see it. Although drives yield the most sightings early in the morning or in the early evening, when game and other wildlife are more likely to be seen, the rangers will adhere entirely to guests schedules.
Whatever guests, particularly those from overseas, perhaps never having previously had the privilege of exposure to South Africa's astonishing array of wildlife and game, could imagine awaits and more! And for those who are happily packing their mosquito repellent, bush hats and donning their hiking boots - to once again walk free on safari - the vista of wildlife, flora and fauna, and the scent and taste of the African bush will be comfortingly familiar, making them wish they had never left!
The magnificent sable were first discovered on the vast plains of the Groot Marico district next to which Madikwe is situated and the reserve offers potential sightings of many other buck such as Gemsbok, Impala, Springbok, Kudu and Nyala. The ‘top ten’ are of course also there to reward the observant guest on a game drive Lion, Leopard, Elephant, Black and White Rhino, Buffalo, Brown and Spotted Hyena, Giraffe, Wild Dog and Cheetah. Morukuru not only offers guests their own private game-viewing vehicle and dedicated game ranger; but also an experienced tracker to assist in a fun, informative and inclusive game-viewing experience. Finally, with bird species numbering some 340, avid bird lovers will also not be disappointed.
